Vegetarian and vegan mock meats are now available at Burwood Highway Asian Grocery. Also known as alternative meat or meat analogue, Mock Meats is made using vegetarian ingredients like Soy protein and Taro. Organic Tempeh (Fermented Soy Bean) is also available at the vegetarian section at Burwood Highway Asian Grocery. Here is a short article describing how mock meats are made.
Mock meat products come in several different forms: frozen, dried, packets, and dried. Mostly produced in Taiwan and Malaysia, and some in Australia, the food standard for vegetarian mock meat is pretty high.
Some guide to preparation:
Dried Textured Protein
To hydrate the dried protein, add 1 cup of boiling water to 3/4 to 1 cup of textured protein and leave it for 10 minutes. Then use the hydrated protein like how you use meat cutlets.
Frozen Mock Meat
Frozen mock meat needs to be defrosted if used for stir-fry dishes. If cooking stew, curry, or deep-frying, no defrosting is needed. Then just treat frozen/defrosted vegetarian meat like any other meat cutlets.
Canned Vegetarian Meat
Canned mock meat is usually preserved in salty or stewed soup. It can be cooked straight away from the can, no special preparation methods needed for canned mock meat.
